Short Number Plates: Legal, Stylish, and Worth It?

Shortened number plates are exactly what they sound like; smaller than traditional plates while still displaying the full registration. While a standard UK number plate measures 20 inches (520 mm) in length, shortened plates can be as small as 11 inches (287 mm), though the most common sizes are 18 inches (457 mm), 16 inches (406 mm), and 14 inches (355 mm). Despite the reduction in size all plates maintain a height of 111 mm.

If you're wondering whether shortened number plates are road legal, the answer is yes; as long as they comply with DVLA regulations. In 2023, they were officially recognized as legal, provided that the first and last letters are at least 11 mm from the edges of the plate. This means you can enjoy a sleek, custom look while still staying within the law.
